Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity
My name is Denise Chirila and I am the Marketing Coordinator for the Boca Raton branch in sunny south Florida. I got the opportunity to volunteer last Friday, May 4th from 8am-12pm, at a build site for Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach. The construction site was located 30 minutes north of our Academy office in Boynton Beach, FL and it had two supervisors and an assistant who helped put on the volunteer event. This Habitat team (as well as about 10 volunteers) come to this site four days a week in hopes of building a new home for the less fortunate. I got to learn that, upon completion of the house, Habitat will then give it to a low-income family and I also learned that this company has helped almost seven million people find strength, stability, and independence through safe and affordable shelter. I got to the site about 20 minutes before the event started, and I would quickly find out that each volunteer that had been there that Friday morning was a retired person who have all volunteered their time for months before. This day, we were applying wood straps across the entire ceiling and because carrying and using the nail gun wore me out—I then got to assist in building stools so that Habitat volunteers can use for future events. I got to work one-on-one with Habitat’s construction assistant, Ms. Maria (please see selfie below) 😊. All in all, I loved being able to help build this home, and I look forward to going back in the future.
